DIY Hair Mask Recipe

Sometimes keeping my hair looking healthy and shiny feels like a full-time job. I only use the best organic shampoos and conditioners, to make sure I’m not exposing my hair and skin to drying detergents and harsh chemicals. Hey today I have a blog post on a book called DIY DYE Bright & Funky Temporary Hair Coloring You Do At Home. As you can guess from the tile this book is all about dying your hair, yourself!

In this book there are 3 main parts: Get Ready, The Dyes and DIY Style. Get Ready talks about the steps you need to know before you jump into dying your hair, this part also talks about bleaching your hair and what to expect when dyeing your hair different colours.  The Dyes section of this book mention different dyeing techniques like how to bleach hair, hair chalking, how to dye hair with Kool Aid (YUP you can dye your hair with Kool Aid) and much more techniques. What is most interesting to me is the Henna section because I want to try Lush Cosmetics Henna Bar and this help me to better understand how Henna works. The last section of this book is the DIY Style which is all about the different styles in which you can dye your hair for example ombre and tip dye.

Overall this is a good book if your looking for new and safer ways to dye your hair and also a great book to read if you have never dye your hair before and you want to.

The Secrets to Shiny Hair

Hi Kayla’s readers, my name is Lesley and I’m obsessed with all things hair. I talk mostly about 

hair care on my blog, Fresh Lengths, with a heavy focus on growing long relaxed hair. For as long as 

I can remember I’ve been a total product junkie, so I thought I’d share some of my favourite products currently which have helped me maintain the condition of my hair.

1. Moisturiser

My hair type is naturally dry which means it craves constant moisture. To give my hair that fix I like 

to use light products, which won’t weigh my hair down or make it too oily as my hair is a mix of fine 

and medium strands. My favourite leave-ins currently are Root2Tip's Triple M Miracle Moisture Milk 

and Mixed Roots Curl Control Leave-In Lotion. 

2. Conditioner 

As I can't use a huge amount if moisturiser I rely on deep conditioners to thoroughly hydrate and 

revive my hair. I've used a lot of great conditioners as I'm a product junkie but my staple for some 

time has been Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm. It's really thick and I don't need a massive 

amount to reap the benefits. It is on the pricey side as it's a salon brand but I've not found anything 

that compares! I've tried other products by Joico too and this particular product remains my 

favourite. 

3. Oil

I have a crazy amount oils which never get used for cooking. I love using natural oils on my skin and 

hair as they have so many benefits. I have quite an oily scalp, so I like to use oils most on my ends 

as a pre shampoo treatment. My favourite oil at the moment is Coconut Oil. I usually apply about a 

teaspoon to the ends for about 10-15 minutes and this helps prevent my hair from drying out during 

the shampoo process. Since I’ve been using Coconut Oil regularly my ends have stayed in great 

condition. 

4. Flat Iron

I don’t use heat often as I don’t want to damage my hair, but when I do I reach for my Coroliss flat 

iron. It gets my coily hair super smooth with minimal heat. There’s a temperature dial so you can 

choose how hot it gets and the plates ‘float’ preventing overheating on one spot of the hair. I’ve 

tried quite a few brands of flat-irons and this is without a doubt one of my favourites. 

5. Scissors 

I know it’s a bit of a weird addition to my ‘top’ hair products, but I could not live without my hair 

scissors! I cut my own hair and rely mostly on very small trims to get rid of any damage or split 

ends. I believe that the key to maintaining long or healthy hair lies in trimming when necessary. For a 

long time I ran from the scissors as I thought it meant my hair would be forever short, but since I’ve 

embraced them I’ve found that’s not the case at all.

My Experience 

There are also tons of other benefits that I didn't list which are beauty related and others that are not.

I personally have experience some great results with using this oil. When I first got this oil I read online about a hair challenge called grow your hair an inch in seven days. Which you're to apply castor oil to your scalp for seven days and message it in for 4 minutes at night. I did just that however I only did it for 6 days and my hair grew a nice amount I was so surprised. My hair grew from the longest point which was 28.4 inches to 29.5 inches in seven days. As well I noticed my hair looked thicker and shiny.

I have also been using this on my brows and lashes since I got this oil. As the reason I got this oil in the first place was because two of my favorite You Tubers mad a video about using castor oil to help grow and thicken their lashes and browns. I have notices my brows look a bit thicker as well a little bit of thickness I have notice for my lashes. As far as length of my lashes I don't think I have seen them get longer yet. But I know it will take longer to see those kinds of results. 

And last I have also used castor oil to help with joint pain. In December I had really bad pain my knee hurt really bad when I would bend it as well my whole right leg felt numb. Nothing the doctor gave me helped and then I saw that castor oil can help for joint pain so I tried this. I have to say in a day I noticed little bit of a difference and in a week I noticed even more of a difference. In maybe 3 weeks of using castor oil on my leg  ever day it felt better the numbness was the first this that went away and the pain in my knee took a bit longer to heel.

Review

The first product I tried was the Amazon With Clay Thickening Styling Crème which like all of there products adds body & richness into fin, thin and lifeless hair. I personally don't use styling crèmes I prefer using oils in my hair to style. How ever I liked and use this crème when I put my hair in pony tails and buns. Fall is here and that means wet weather when ever it rains I always wear my hair up and this is great to help the fly away hairs to stay down. It doesn't leave any white residue behind in your hair which is great because some styling crèmes do. However I did find the scent of this product to be to strong for my liking. Amazon White Clay Thickening Leave In Mist I have been using after I wash my hair, I think this products helps to leave your hair soft and it smells great. It has the same smell as the crème but it's not as strong of a smell as the crème. Like this crème this too helps to add body & richness to your hair.

Guest Post How to Fix Your Fried Hair

 

Alright ladies, it’s time to pull up a chair, grab a snack and let me tell you a little story about my crunchy hair.  About three months ago I decided I was going to lighten my hair for the summer.  I was envisioning a sunny beach, glorious caramel colored tresses, a pinã colada in hand and a well-muscled cabana boy attending to my every need.  

What I got was fried orange hair and an emergency trip to the salon.

Whether it involves bleach, dye, or styling tools, we’ve all damaged our hair at one point or another.  Friends, I am here to tell you how to fix it.  

Chemical Damage

As much as we love it, it really is time to lay off the hair dye.  All semi-permanent and permanent dyes contain peroxide.  Peroxide is bad news for your hair because it breaks down the hair’s cuticle.   If you just have to have a color change, apply hair dye to your roots and then comb it through the ends in the last few minutes.   

Follow up your dye job with a steam treatment once a week.  

How to Steam Your Hair:

After giving your tresses a good shampooing, apply a deep conditioner to your wet hair.  Microwave a large bowl of water for three minutes until steaming.  Pull on some thick rubber gloves (the kind you clean with) and dunk a towel into the hot water, wring out excess and let it cool for a few seconds.   Wrap the towel turban-style around your hair; let it sit for five minutes and then rinse.

Steaming adds moisture to your hair, gently lifts the cuticle to allow treatments to soak in and enhances your hair’s natural texture!

Heat Damage

Heated styling tools are incredibly destructive to the hair’s cuticle.   Once you fry the cuticle, the cortex is left exposed. The scorched cortex soaks up moisture from the air to compensate, and you’re left with a head full of frizz. Continued use of hot tools on damaged hair causes it to become even more brittle and eventually break off.  That, my friends, is a nightmare none of us want to experience.

So, how do we fix this problem?

Start by misting a heat protectant with panthenol on towel dried hair.  Blow dry with a dryer that has a nozzle attachment so there’s a safe distance between your hair and the dryer's metal coil.

For you flatiron happy ladies, keep an eye on the heat.  Use 360°F for fine hair and 410°F for thicker strands.

Products containing keratin (a protein found naturally in your hair), such as gloessentials Reparative Keratin - Leave-in Treatment, are a great way to revitalize heat damaged hair.  

Product Build Up

If your hair is looking a bit dull and lifeless, buildup may be the culprit.  Styling products and hard water can cause a nasty build up that robs our hair of its natural shine.  

If your hair is suffering a nasty case of the gunk, a clarifying shampoo or treatment is the answer.  My personal favorite is Pureology Purify Shampoo.   Use clarifying treatments sparingly, as overuse can cause your hair to become dry and brittle.  

Do It Yourself

A homemade moisturizing hair mask can do wonders for damaged hair.  The following recipe is one of my favorites.  

Ingredients:

2 egg yolks

2 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil

Half of a ripe avocado

Directions:

Mash the avocado with the olive oil in a large bowl.  Mix in the egg yolks.  Coat your hair with the mixture, then cover with shower cap and leave on for 20 minutes.  Rinse with cool water and shampoo and condition as usual.

Avocado is rich in fatty acids and acts a natural moisturizer.   Egg yolks are packed with vitamins A, D, and E which makes for shiny, healthy hair.

By using specially formulated treatments and giving my hair a rest from chemicals and heat, I’ve restored its natural beauty.  Take care of your strands, ladies, and go forth with gorgeous, happy hair.

How To Use

FOR WET SETS AND SOFT TO MEDIUM HOLD:
On short to shoulder length hair, part hair into 2 or 4 inch sections using a quarter-size amount of gel for each. Increase amount for longer or very thick hair. The more product you use, a firmer hold will result. Cojoba™ is versatile and we encourage you to experiment to find the level of hold you desire. To avoid clumped hair comb product through strands, insuring even distribution. Once the product has been evenly distributed, set on rollers or otherwise style as normal. Use a dryer to shorten set time. After removing rollers, etc. lightly scrunch hair to soften if you find the hold to be too firm.

AS A CURL DEFINER:
On damp shoulder length hair, section hair into 2 or 4 inch sections and apply a quarter-size amount to each section. Using your fingers, distribute product evenly through each section being careful not to disturb hair’s natural curl pattern. Scrunch hair for greater definition. Lightly blow dry with a hood dryer or hand dryer with a diffuser attachment, or allow hair to dry naturally. If you find final hold to be too firm, simply scrunch hair to soften.


Review

I took picture of my hair at different times so you can see how my hair style held up though out my day, on two different days.

On this day I went out with my cousin to the mall, so I hair went through getting pulled on a bit when trying on clothes, which I have to say when I curl my hair and I'm trying on cloths in the mall my hair pretty much also loses a bit of my curls because my hair get a bit pulled on my the clothes I was surprise that this didn't happen so much with this product. In the picture below I didn't do too much on that day that would cause my hair to uncurl.

 

Overall I enjoy this product I think it smells great, its quick drying. Because this is a gel I was thinking that I would have to wait a while for this product to dry before I can style be hair but there was like not waiting time. From the time I put this product into my hair and comb it in, it was dry and ready for me to continue on in styling my hair. I believe this product has great hold and unlike a hair spray it leaves your hair soft and not hard. It's also easy to comb out at the end of the day and didn't leave any white flakes behind. Ever notice when you try to comb hair spray out of your hair it hurts or white flakes are left behind. I even ended up using this on my cousin and the first thing she said was this smell great, the next day I asked her what she thought and she liked it as well and mentioned it didn't dry out her ends which is a problem she has with some products.

Update: Since I filmed this video sometime at the beginning of January I have never used the mini waver again and I can't picture myself doing this again. The process was long and by the end of the day my final thoughts were this is an ok look but personally for me I don't love it. I felt at the end of the day my hair looked like it was crimped like in the 80s lol and not like waves.
